The Dancer-Puppet Connections in Performing Arts of West Java
UCSC has one of the largest gamelan programs outside of Indonesia due to the teaching of Music Lecturer Undang Sumarna who comes from a family of great drummers and has been teaching at UCSC since 1975. Undang and Kathy Foley (Merrill Interim Provost) will demonstrate how dance drama emulates the rod puppet (wayang golek) and Islamic performers tell Indian epics to celebrate circumcisions, weddings and other important events. Teaching these arts at UCSC has launched a generation of ethnomusicologists, linguists, diplomats, political scientists and theatre artists who use ideas from Sundanese arts of West Java in diverse ways. (with gamelan musicians from the Advanced Gamelan Class and puppet and dance demonstration).

Fate of Fossil Fuel Carbon: Challenges and Opportunities
James Zachos, Ph.D., is a Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC). Dr. Zachos' research interests include ocean acidification, the biological and chemical evolution of the oceans, and past climate change. He received his Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island in 1988, was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, and a fellow at University of Cambridge. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications on Earth's past climate, particularly the periods of extreme greenhouse warmth, as well as on the initiation of ice ages. He is also a major contributor to resolving the short- and long-term impacts of rapid releases of carbon on climate and ocean pH. He has served on the NAS/National Research Council's Committee on Climate Change, and is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He has received a Humboldt Award for his research on past climates. Dr. Zachos also contributed to the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report.
