Crown Lecturer Linda Glenn has just been named among the 2025 "100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics" by Women in AI Ethicsâ„¢
Excellence in Entrepreneurship Teaching and Pedagogical Innovation
Crown’s innovation and entrepreneurship program, which is delivered in partnership with the UCSC’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development, was honored with a Highly Commended distinction in the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Teaching and Pedagogical Innovation category at the 2024 Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) Conference. This annual event brought together over 700 innovation and entrepreneurship centers worldwide representing 300 universities. CIED was among sixteen programs recognized for their outstanding contributions.
Other notable awardees include:
Yale University, Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking: Recognized for Exceptional Activities in Entrepreneurship Across Disciplines.
University of Chicago, Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Honored for Outstanding Contributions to Venture Creation.
University of Toronto Entrepreneurship: Winner in multiple categories, including Outstanding Contributions to Venture Creation.
Crown lecturer and CIED project manager Nada Miljkovic has recently released a movie: Joymakers.
 This film is about the world of South Serbian Roma trumpeters and their quest to establish a music school, dedicated to nurturing young talent and preserving their rich musical heritage The film’s compelling narrative, celebrating themes of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of music, resonates deeply with audiences across the globe. Joymakers was awarded the Grand Prix at the 8th Annual FROM (International Festival of Short Films with a Roma Theme), it was named a Winner at the Miami Women Film Festival 2024, it has been accepted into the prestigious Berlin Women’s Cinema Festival, and it has premiered in for other international film festivals.
Signals from the Stars Plenary
Bill Diamond (CEO and Director of the Search for Extraterrestrial Life Institute -SETI-) was interviewed by Loren Kinzell (member of the UC Observatory Director’s Advisory Council and Chair-elect of the UCSC Board of Trustees), about his journey in technology development. This journey included work on photonics, with the development of laser-based methods to profile the chemical composition of the atmosphere as a way to monitor pollution, and the development of optical communications. Bill also shared his fascinating experience leading a team of scientists to look for evidence of intelligent extraterrestrial life in other star systems. This event was co-sponsored by Crown College, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development (CIED), and the Sikh Foundation

Crown Appoints three highly successful professionals as Adjunct Professors in Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development so that they can share their experience in industry and facilitate our student’s transition into the job market. These will be dedicated faculty who will not only teach, but also conduct research and service.

Artificial Intelligence Panel:​
Four experts in artificial intelligence exchanged points of view on the challenges and likely impacts of artificial intelligence on society and responded to student questions. From left to right, the panelists were: Sri Rao (Crown Adjunct Professor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship), Leilani Gilpin (Associate Professor in Computer Science and Engineering), Chris Gray (Crown Lecturer and intellectual known for his work on cyborgs and technology and war), and Linda Glenn (Crown Lecturer and known ethicist)

Crown Remembers Dr. Thimann
Dr. Kenneth V. Thimann was the Founding Provost of Crown College when the Class of 1974 arrived in Fall 1970. Class of ‘74 remembers him as they look at photos from that time and listen to Dr. Thimann once again via recordings from UCSC Special Collections.

Crown Instructor, Lisa Berkley, wins Teaching Excellence Award
Crown College Lecturer, Lisa Berkley, has been awarded the prestigious Teaching Excellence Award for her extraordinary pedagogical creativity and dedication in support of student resiliency. This UCSC campus recognition honors instructors who have demonstrated exemplary and inspiring teaching. Lisa was only one of eight faculty to receive this award this year, from 370 student nominations.
